Condense

[EN] Condense is a French hardcore punk band from Lyon, active between 1990 and 1996, now widely regarded as a cult act within the French independent scene. Emerging from the vibrant European underground of the early 1990s, the band developed a tense, abrasive, and uncompromising sound, blending elements of noise hardcore and post-hardcore, in the vein of influential acts such as Fugazi and The Jesus Lizard, with whom they also shared the stage.

Following an initial EP released on the Toulouse-based label Panx!, Condense quickly asserted its identity with Air, a six-track CD issued by Pandemonium Records. The band then embarked on extensive European touring, building a strong reputation through intense and uncompromising live performances.

In 1995, Condense released Genuflex, recorded in Geneva at the Studio des Forces Motrices with David Weber. This album marked a significant milestone, both in terms of sonic maturity and wider recognition, leading to numerous international tours. The band performed in Italy with Deity Guns, in France alongside Unsane, and toured Scandinavia with Headcleaner, before continuing through Spain and Belgium. In France, Condense frequently shared the stage with key figures of the independent scene such as Burning Heads, Drive Blind, Portobello Bones, Prohibition, and Bästard.

In 1996, Condense released Placebo, their final album, before disbanding after an intense tour of 32 shows in 40 days, culminating in a last performance in Saint-Étienne. Their breakup marked the end of a band that had become cult, whose influence continues to resonate within the French hardcore and noise scenes.

Twenty years later, in 2016, Condense’s legacy was brought back into focus with the reissue of their two albums on vinyl and digital formats by Atypeek Music and Euthanasie, reaffirming the band’s lasting importance in the history of French hardcore punk.

[FR] Condense est un groupe français de punk hardcore originaire de Lyon, actif entre 1990 et 1996, aujourd’hui considéré comme une formation culte de la scène indépendante française. Issu de l’effervescence alternative du début des années 1990, le groupe développe une esthétique sonore tendue, abrasive et exigeante, à la croisée du hardcore noise et du post-hardcore, dans la lignée d’acteurs majeurs comme Fugazi ou The Jesus Lizard, avec lesquels il partagera d’ailleurs l’affiche.  Après un premier EP publié sur le label toulousain Panx!, Condense affirme rapidement son identité avec Air, un CD 6 titres sorti chez Pandemonium Records. Le groupe entame alors une activité scénique soutenue à l’échelle européenne, se forgeant une réputation solide grâce à des performances intenses et sans concession.

 

En 1995 paraît Genuflex, enregistré à Genève au Studio des Forces Motrices sous la direction de David Weber. Cet album marque une étape décisive, tant par sa maîtrise sonore que par son rayonnement, ouvrant au groupe de nombreuses tournées internationales. Condense se produit ainsi en Italie avec Deity Guns, en France aux côtés d’Unsane, et parcourt la Scandinavie avec Headcleaner, avant de poursuivre en Espagne et en Belgique. Sur le territoire français, le groupe partage régulièrement la scène avec des figures majeures de la scène indépendante telles que Burning Heads, Drive Blind, Portobello Bones, Prohibition ou Bästard. 

 

En 1996, Condense publie Placebo, son dernier album, avant de conclure son parcours à l’issue d’une tournée intense de 32 concerts en 40 jours, ponctuée par un ultime concert à Saint-Étienne. Cette séparation marque la fin d’un groupe devenu culte, dont l’influence continue de marquer durablement la scène hardcore et noise française. 

 

Vingt ans plus tard, en 2016, l’héritage de Condense est remis en lumière avec la réédition de ses deux albums en vinyle et en format digital par les labels Atypeek Music et Euthanasie, confirmant l’importance durable du groupe dans l’histoire du punk hardcore français.
